Product Description

Buckwheat is commonly mistaken for a cereal grain that is related to wheat, when it is actually a dicotyledon seed. It is however treated in a similar way to other common wheat and cereal grains. It is brown to grey in colour with a think outer hull and the inside is has a seed-kernel that is creamy white and has a nutty flavour. Buckwheat is also gluten free and a great alternative to wheat for celiacs.

Buckwheat contains more starch than other similar seeds like quinoa and amaranth and in terms of calories can be compared to that of major cereals like wheat, maize and rice. Buckwheat contains less protein than other seeds however still composes almost all of the indispensable amino acids. They are a very rich source of fibre which makes them excellent for gut and bowel health. Buckwheat also have more B-Complex vitamins than quinoa and are also very high in minerals including copper and magnesium.
